Journey north to the charming coastal town of Oban, renowned as Scotland’s seafood capital and the ‘Gateway to the Isles’. The bustling port, with its constant stream of ferries to the Outer Hebrides and beyond, is utterly captivating – you could spend hours watching the comings and goings.
Hop on the ferry to the enchanting Isle of Mull, with its rugged landscapes and colourful capital, Tobermory. A further ferry will take you to the ‘Cradle of Christianity’, Iona. Today, you will drive into the enchanting region of Argyll in western Scotland. You could stop to explore the idyllic lochside town of Inveraray – home to the 18th-century Inveraray Castle, or Auchindrain – the most complete and well-preserved example of a Scottish Highland farm township.

The natural beauty of this largely undiscovered corner of Scotland awaits. Explore Tarbert Castle, with its historic ties to Robert the Bruce, and take in the breathtaking views of the Isle of Arran from the majestic Skipness Castle. From here, drive down the rugged coast to remote Saddell Bay, immortalised in the music video for Paul McCartney & Wings Mull of Kintyre.

Today, you could take a ferry to the enchanting Isle of Gigha. Though tiny – just seven miles long and a mile and a half wide – Gigha is rich in history and community spirit. Discover ancient standing stones, ruined churches, the glorious Achamore Gardens, pristine sandy beaches, and a charming restaurant famous for its fresh lobster.
Alternatively, hop across to the Isle of Arran, which is also a short ferry journey away. This rugged island is an outdoor lover’s dream, with dramatic mountains, deep glens, and shimmering lochs.

Leave Kintyre and journey north to the vibrant coastal town of Oban, fondly known as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’.
Today’s drive offers a wealth of places to explore. Take a short detour to the scenic village of Crinan, celebrated for its pretty canal and one of Scotland’s finest seafood restaurants, or climb the rocky outcrop of Dunadd. This small hill offers magnificent views and was historically significant for the crowning ceremonies of the ancient Kingdom of Dalriada.
Continuing north, you’ll enter the remarkable Kilmartin Glen. This is one of Scotland’s most significant prehistoric landscapes, offering countless chambered cairns, standing stones, and rock carvings. Don’t miss the excellent Kilmartin Museum for an introduction to the area’s history.
Overnight – Oban
In Oban, you’re spoiled for choice with countless sightseeing options. Sample the local whisky at Oban Distillery, dine on world-class seafood, or set sail on a sightseeing boat tour. Keep your eyes peeled for porpoises, seals, otters, and dolphins.
For a change of scenery, you could venture inland to the impressive Loch Awe. Here, you can visit Kilchurn Castle, one of our most photogenic ruins, and the impressively ornate St. Conan’s Kirk.
