Discover Jersey’s Stunning Coastline on an Island Circuit

The Jersey Coastal Path is a 48-mile circuit of the island’s beautiful coastline. Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, situated between England and France. A unique melting pot of English reserve and French savoir-faire, home to cosmopolitan harbours and timeless hidden coves, the island is known for its continental flair and diverse, natural beauty.

This stunning island was made for a walking holiday. Just a short distance from the French coast, walking in Jersey combines the best of both British and Gallic experience. The language is English, the road signs are in French, and the cuisine is a mouth-watering mix of local traditions.

The coastal walk offers an amazing variety of terrain. In the north the heather-covered cliffs provide spectacular views across the sea to the other Channel Islands, while the south of the island is home to golden, magical bays surrounding the capital St Helier.

From dramatic, winding cliff paths to serene, sandy beaches, Jersey has a rich and varied landscape to explore on foot. The sun rises in the east above the French coastline, visible just 18 miles across the Channel, and sets in the west, merging with the stark blue waters and white sands of St Ouen’s Bay.

Jersey is the perfect place to relax, unwind and enjoy a laid-back walking holiday.

Arrive in St Helier, the Island’s lovely capital, and spend the evening at your first night’s accommodation.

Day 1: St Helier to La Pulente (12 miles / 19 km)

Leave the hustle and bustle of St Helier and enjoy an easy stroll along the promenade around St Aubin’s Bay. At low tide, you can walk out to explore Elizabeth Castle along a tidal causeway. Take a break in one of the pretty harbourside cafes of St Aubin, then continue onwards to Noirmont Point with its panoramic views.

After the scenic bay of St Brelade, a fine walk over the headland takes in more spectacular coastal scenery along rugged cliffs. Tide permitting, walk over to the rocky islet of La Corbiere and its iconic lighthouse, before reaching La Pulente. Stay overnight in St Brelade.

Day 2: La Pulente to La Greve de Lecq (10.5 miles / 16.5 km)

If tides permit, begin the day with a long walk across the vast expanse of St Ouen’s iconic sandy bay. The coastal walk then climbs steadily, passing vivid memories of the German occupation, following airy cliff tops to Grosnez Castle. From here the Channel Islands of Guernsey, Jethou, Herm, Sark, the Paternosters and Alderney can be seen clearly.

The trail winds its way down to Plemont, then follows a scenic cliff path to Greve de Lecq with its lovely sheltered cove, sandy beach, mill conversion pub and cafés.

Day 3: La Greve de Lecq to Bouley Bay (11.5 miles / 18.5 km)

A strenuous day of undulating cliff paths lies ahead along the island’s isolated north coast. The Devil’s Hole – a collapsed cave is a real highlight today. Start the day with a delightful cliff walk to La Falaise.

At Sorel Point, the most northerly tip of the island, admire the glorious views over to Sark and the Normandy coast, before descending into the charming fishing harbour at Bonne Nuit Bay, a once-famous haunt for smugglers of Spanish brandy, French wines and tobacco. Heading east the path climbs again to Les Platons (136m / 446 ft), the highest point on the island, then descends sharply down to the colourful fishing harbour at Bouley Bay. Stay overnight in Gorey Bay.

Day 4: Bouley Bay to Gorey Bay (8 miles / 13 km)

From Bouley Bay enjoy more spectacular views to Normandy as the undulating cliff path continues around the north-east corner of the island to Rozel Bay with its old oyster fishing harbour. The headland at Fliquet Bay is Jersey’s closest point to France just 14 miles away.

Walking at sea level now the walk continues to St Catherine. The massive breakwater sheltering St Catherine’s Bay provides a popular walk in its own right. Mont Orgueil Castle towering above the Royal Bay of Grouville guides you to the end of today’s walk and a visit to this castle is a highlight of any holiday to Jersey.

Day 5: Gorey Bay to St Helier (6.5 miles / 10.5 km)

Today’s final stretch to St Helier is a shorter one so before leaving Gorey there is plenty of time to explore.

Depending on the tides much of the final days walk to St Helier can be along the beach. South of Gorey lies the Royal Bay of Grouville with its sandy beach and the remaining Jersey Round towers that safeguarded us from days gone by, and then La Roque and St Clement’s Bay and the lunar-like seascape of low-lying reefs and rocks that are covered twice daily by Jersey’s huge tides.

It’s an easy walk back to St Helier where a wonderful circuit of Jersey’s beautiful coastline comes to an end.
